RESEARCH VISIT TO IIHR – HYDROSCIENCE & ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITY OF IOWA: ROBERTO QUAGLIA

Bristol Cohort 5 student Roberto Quaglia was based in Iowa from September-December 2022 for his research visit.  Roberto was hosted by the University of Iowa within IIHR – Hydroscience & Engineering, a renowned centre on fluids-related research. Here he worked closely with Professor Gabriele Villarini’s team of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Roberto reports that the expected outputs from his research visit were fully achieved. His investigations at IIHR enabled Roberto to answer two research questions for his PhD thesis. He benefited from access to the centre’s high performance computing facilities, the close support provided by Professor Villarini and regular feedback from team members through presentations and informal discussion. A joint publication is planned.

Roberto considers that personal benefits were living and working in another country with a new research group, where he experienced a different culture and working practices. He also greatly expanded his personal and professional networks.

Roberto rounded off his time in the USA by participating in the 2022 AGU Fall Meeting in Chicago, where he showcased the conclusions of his research visit and networked with fellow researchers engaged in Earth and space sciences.
