Student Blog: HIC 2018 – Zara Visanji

Congratulations to Cohort 4 student Zara Visanji, who received the HIC 2018 Best Student Paper Award for the theme: hydraulic and hydrological modelling. Her paper was entitled ‘Emerging pollutants in developing countries: optimising sustainable treatment solutions.’ Keep reading to hear about Zara’s experience of HIC 2018:

“The HIC conference was the largest I had been to so far, with over 400 delegates coming from industrial and academic backgrounds. It was an amazing experience being able to learn from some of the top academics in the field of hydroinformatics with a range of talks being covered over the four days. There were a range of themes running throughout the conference including big data, remote sensing, water management and climate change impacts. I was very lucky to be given the chance to learn new modelling techniques and innovations regarding water quality that hopefully I can apply to my own PhD. Preparing a 15 minute presentation and delivering it to a room of advanced students and academics was a scary and nerve-racking experience. However, it has allowed me to see that my presentation skills are improving and provided me with the opportunity to practise answering difficult questions. The chosen location for the Gala Dinner was set along the beach of Mondello providing amazing scenic views for a grand dinner. Overall it was a great opportunity and I look forward to the next HIC 2020 conference in Mexico.”
