Students working on Hackathon

The first annual WISE CDT Summer School took place in June 2015; students and staff spent the week at the Springfield Hotel, Dorset in order to enjoy a practical approach to learning about water informatics.

Students participated in a Hackathon over the course of the week, in which they were tasked with developing a platform to solve a challenge currently being faced by the water industry. The winning group developed the ‘Taps for Taps’ app and were presented with the WISE CDT trophy.

Guest speakers at the week included Professor Patrick Reed of Cornell University, USA, Lewis Jones of South West Water and Dr Jon Wicks, CH2M Hill.

Students and staff also went on a boat tour of Poole Harbour, following a briefing session from WISE CDT Co-Director Professor Roger Falconer on Hydro-Envrionmental Modelling: Holes Bay and Poole Harbour. This was followed by a visit to Wessex Water Poole Treatment Plant.
